NOTICE

Due to our shelter's current capacity and limited funding, we are unable to accommodate additional animals at this time. We have compiled a list of resources below for those seeking to rehome a cat or other pet.

Please be aware that animal rescue organizations are frequently overwhelmed. We encourage you to explore all possible options to rehome your pet yourself before considering surrendering them to a shelter.

Discovered a pet allergy?

Dealing with allergies can be incredibly challenging. To support you during this time, we’ve provided a couple of helpful articles to guide you as you search for a new home for your pet.

Online Options for Rehoming a Pet

You can list your pet for sale at no cost on platforms like Rehome by Adopt a Pet or Rescue Me. Be sure to include a heartwarming description that highlights your pet's age, temperament, and unique traits, along with quality photos. Sharing your personal story and setting a rehoming fee can help connect with potential adopters.

Additionally, consider posting pictures and a call for help on your social media accounts. Facebook is particularly effective for rehoming pets. If you don’t have an account, ask a friend to share on your behalf. Here are some helpful Facebook groups to get started:

After a Home is Found

Before finalizing the adoption, be sure to exchange contact information with the adopter – name, address, phone number, and email. If the adopter is renting, please confirm with their landlord that having a pet is permitted before completing the adoption.

If applicable, request that the adopter sign a statement agreeing to have the pet spayed or neutered. Alternatively, consider arranging for this procedure before rehoming. Heart of Minnesota offers several low-cost spay/neuter programs in the Twin Cities area, and Purple Cat in Baldwin Wisconsin, just an hour outside of the Twin Cities, is another excellent resource.

Holding Period for Impounded or Stray Animals

Source: Minnesota Legislature

A. With the exception of items B and C, an impounded or stray animal must be held for redemption by the owner for at least five regular business days or for a longer time specified by statute or municipal ordinance.

B. Upon a proper determination by a licensed veterinarian, an impounded or stray animal may be immediately euthanized if the animal is physically suffering and is beyond cure through reasonable care and treatment.

C. An impounded or stray animal that has bitten a human may be euthanized and tested for rabies before the required five-day holding period if requested by the Department of Health.
